While the insensitive partisan speculation about what will happen should Senator Johnson ultimately be unable to serve isn't surprising, I'm quite off put that the secretary of state isn't being a bit more, I don't know, statesmanlike regarding the situation.
Chris Nelson, a GOP crony of Mike Rounds, is quoted all over the place saying (bragging?) that an "appointment by the governor and a replacement would not have to be from the same political party."

- We're not going to comment on hypotheticals. Our prayers are with Senator Johnson and his family.
- In the event that Senator Johnson cannot serve, the governor would have to make an appointment--but none of us are even thinking about that right now. Our prayers are with Senator Johnson's family (and all of the aborted fetuses throughout our great state).

- The governor would, of course, appoint a Democrat. He is not a dick.
By making it sound inevitable and obvious, the media is making it acceptable for Rounds to just appoint a Republican.

If the Gov. fails to realize that the partisan composition of the U.S. Senate ought not be decided by one man, and if he usurps the wishes of the American people, and if he truly HATES democracy by appointing a Republican to fill the seat, and he turns out to be a DICK, all freedom-loving, democracy caring-about, red-blooded Americans should boycott any and all things from South Dakota.
Are you seriously put off that a corporate entity that is unaccountable to any electorate isn't putting its considerable muscle and influence behind its pet cause simply because in this case that cause is yours? I'd prefer the media, as a news source, stay out of all political advocacy.
If your comment, however, was directed not at the news coverage but rather at the opinion writers, I wouldn't worry. If the Sen.'s health takes a graver turn and the Gov. begins serious talk of consideration of specific candidates can you honestly see the like of MoDo not echoing you cry, though possibly in a tad bit more polite terms.

if the procedure allows the governor to choose a replacement, that is part of what people vote for when they choose a governor.
